Ghost in our machine

What is our relationship to animals? Are they here to serve us? Should we take advantage? Or should we reconsider our role?
Can we live without meat? Or do we need the proteins?
In general people will answer most of these questions without considering we’re actually talking about individual beings, not about some product made in a factory.

That’s the strength of the documentary posted above. It shifts our focus to the truth of the individual existence of animals, both large and small. They have a right to live, just as we do.

Just portraying this creates a powerful message. Foxes and ferret are held in tiny cages purely for their fur. A being with no other value than their outer skin. Imagine if we value humans like that..

So to me the question is why are we so neglectant of basic rights for animals? Are we really better? So we can decide what to do with them – treating them as objects?

The documentary creates a mirror for me to look into. I am the lost animal,  forgetting about the herd i belong to.  Rather than recognizing i am lost, i prefer to enjoy the illusion of being separate and being above all other beings.

I am the king of the jungle, but i don’t realize I’m destroying my kingdom…

Slowly but surely this railway track is taken over by nature.. great reminder of the impermanence of things we tend to see as permanent. If only we would be aware of all the time and effort it costs us to maintain our human world, we would be much more at ease to let things be and to let things go..

My entry for this week’s Monochrome Madness as hosted by Leanne Cole. An image of the Maas river and a small part of the Rotterdam harbor industry, which is massive.

Tomorrow at http://leanecole.com.au/blog you can find all the entries for this week’s madness

18: Flower of Compassion

Flower of Compassion

Oh flower of the heart
Shine your light over us
Open up and show your beauty
The guiding force

You know what it is like
To be vulnerable
Naked and alone
You know there is no need
To be afraid of our tears

You grow so easily
As you are inherent within us
On the good soil of pure intent
Our wish for all to be happy
Stems from your seeds

Oh flower of compassion
Love is your guiding light
Teach us to be human
Help us to accept
The basic uncertainty of life

This poem was inspired by the documentary Crazy Wisdom (2011) about the late Tibetan Buddhist Master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Rinpoche taught people how to become warriors of Shambhala, how to become genuine human beings. A beautiful and encouraging message worth contemplating.

Ghost

Ghosts klein

Wandering in the forest I meet the ghost
He captures my imagination as he swirls around me
Filling my body with feelings of excitement
As it creates its magic out of thin air

Impressed by the appearances I forget where I am
And soon I find myself lost in the forest with nowhere to go
Yet the ghost keeps on animating me with its stories
Soothing and comforting words and images appear

As I start to worry the ghost suddenly screams out loud
WE’RE LOST AND THERE IS NO WAY OUT OF HERE!”
All I can think about right now is
I want to get out of here and just disappear

The ghost starts to become unbearable to be with
It wont shut up and is totally out of control
No matter how hard I try to escape it
It finds me quicker than I can find my own shadow

So now stuck in this dark forest of illusion
Looking for a way out even though I’m afraid
Lying on the ground I begin to lose hope
While the ghost seems to be laughing at me

Full of desperation I wonder to myself
Why did I ever started this endeavor?
To travel alone into the dark woods
Trying to find the source of life
